Total Confidence vs. Total Incompetence

I think that I remember the point of advertising is to bring customers. But when I look at the current Gm ad campaign, I doubt the brainiacs behind it. It screams when you lose your job, when your car gets stolen, when your car breaks down and when your value drops. Not if.  Given the state of the economy, the ad feeds the fire of why people shouldn’t buy anything now. Whatever happened to bringing the best to market? We actually have great products. Why not sell those?

I am a working man, with 26 years in auto retail supporting my family. We have worked through the best and worst of times. Failure is not an option. Strikes, recessions, market swings, natural disasters and wars, I have worked through all of them. Give us good products and we will sell them. Don’t tell people that everything is going to go wrong but its ok. What message do we want to send? I’m not afraid of tough times, just the incompetence of those in charge.

Yes we are different. Most people say the most unpleasant part of getting a new vehicle is the price negotiation. That’s why we are so successful; we’ve already done that for you. Compare our six rights to how you have been treated elsewhere.

“Sierra Motors’ Buyers Bill of Rights”

…changing the way you purchase your next vehicle.

  1. Receive our best price upfront in writing on every vehicle everyday.
  2.  Receive assistance from non-commissioned sales consultants who are paid based on your complete satisfaction…not how much you spend.
  3. Enjoy a relaxed shopping experience. You do not have to commit to purchase a vehicle, in order to see how much it cost.
  4. Receive the cash value for your trade…whether you buy ours or not.
  5. Receive affordable finance solutions for today and your future.
  6. You can’t buy the wrong vehicle: industry leading seven days or 500 mile (no question asked) full refund policy.

As a person that has been at the dealership level with GM since 1983, I find it interesting to read their own description of themselves. More for what isn’t said than is:

General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM), one of the world’s largest automakers, was founded in 1908, and today manufactures cars and trucks in 34 countries. With its global headquarters in Detroit, GM employs 243,000 people in every major region of the world, and sells and services vehicles in some 140 countries. In 2008, GM sold 8.35 million cars and trucks globally under the following brands: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, GM Daewoo, Holden, Hummer, Opel, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Vauxhall and Wuling. GM’s largest national market is the United States, followed by China, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Canada, Russia and Germany. GM’s OnStar subsidiary is the industry leader in vehicle safety, security and information services. More information on GM can be found at www.gm.com.

Believe me when I say that GM was already lost by the mid 1980’s. Does anybody remember the great new models from Chevrolet? How about the Lumina, Corsica & Beretta? The Geo line featuring the Metro became the butt of low end car jokes. So what did Gm do? Advertise more and more.  Then they started down the path to doom, rebates and interest rate incentives. All the while dealership’s were asking for one simple thing; just build a good car.

The funniest thing of all, or tragic, or sublime is that GM and Ford for that matter, are finally building the best products that have ever been produced. But no one cares. Buy American, a great notion. Buy the best available? Even better. Too many people are confused by the social axiom that says they don’t build cars that people want. Wake up that was 20 years ago, imbecile.

I know that Chevrolet and Cadillac will survive. The rest is still conjecture. I also know that I will get up tomorrow and go to work at a dealership as I have for the last 26 years. I will still have a smile on my face. I will still by proud of my chosen profession. We will do the impossible a daily basis. This is after all an art form that few can master.

GM set to Reveal Viability Plan Details Today

EP SIERRA MOTORS JAMESTOWN CA- Here’s the latest news from Detroit:

BY TIM HIGGINS • FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER • April 27, 2009

General Motors Corp. plans to announce details of its revised viability plan early this morning.
The troubled Detroit automaker is expected to formally launch a debt-to-equity exchange with unsecured bondholders early this week, presumably today, as part of its efforts to restructure nearly $28 billion in debt and to satisfy the White House’s demands for a healthy balance sheet.

GM faces a June 1 deadline to improve its restructuring plan and impress President Barack Obama or face bankruptcy. Obama’s auto task force had ruled that GM’s previous viability plan failed to go far enough in fixing the company, which is staying afloat on $15.4 billion in government loans. The company has lost about $70 billion over the past two years and has asked for as much as $14.6 billion in additional U.S. government loans.

GM Chief Executive Fritz Henderson has said the business plan could include additional job cuts and further plant closings. Many think the company’s Pontiac division will be axed.
