SPORTY GIRLFRIEND, SPORTY CAR
Being in the car business for 26 years I have been on a lot of test-drives, mostly uneventful. Once in a while a driver can get away from you.
The new Camaro Z-28 was an impressive car. It had the designation H.O., for high output. The unmistakable V-8 rumble brought a note of performance. It could be matched with a five-speed manual transmission. T-tops seemed to make the car complete. A great road car, built for the enjoyment of the driver.
Vern came into the dealership and was immediately drawn to the new Camaro. He asked questions about the cars performance. I told him about the fuel injection, the Goodyear Eagle tires, five-speed transmission and rack & pinion steering. We talked acceleration and top speed. Vern seemed very interested in the limits of the Camaro. The only thing that seemed out of the ordinary was that Vern was 83 years young.
I grabbed a dealer plate and made a copy of his driver’s license, ready to go. You gotta love the sound of the V-8 when it comes to life, nice and throaty. Vern seems very comfortable behind the wheel. He heads straight for the freeway. So far everything is good. As Vern pulls onto the freeway, he has his foot heavy on the accelerator.
From 50 mph to 100 mph takes only a couple of seconds when you are on the gas hard. “VERN!!!” I said loud and direct, but receiving no response. Vern kept his foot buried on the accelerator. We shot passed 120 mph…a lot of things crossed my mind…from this is a dangerous speed to this guy is 83 years old.
I actually yelled at Vern “SLOWDOWN!!!”. Vern looked at me with his foot still on the gas and stated emphatically, “Look I got a sporty younger girlfriend and I need a sporty car”! I didn’t think Vern was very happy with me as we ended the test drive. He said that he would be back tomorrow and would let me know. “Great… another passenger on the be-back bus”, I muttered to myself.
The next day to my surprise 83-year-old Vern came in with his 75-year-old sporty younger girlfriend. He told her all of the performance specs and how great it drove. She listened and nodded. He wrote a check for the new manual transmission Camaro Z-28 with t-tops and signs all of the paperwork. They are both all smiles.
He burnt rubber pulling away from the dealership and got scratch going into second and third gear. Sporty indeed.

THE PLAID SUIT AND A SIX PACK
We all have our stereotypes. How we judge people by type or occupation. But who do you know that actually fulfills their look, implicitly? During my life in car sales there has been only one, Rick, who actually owns a plaid suit? No, no, no… a different plaid suit for every day of the week? He might have had enough to cover the whole month. It seemed like a never ending visual assault of plaid.
Not just plaid sport coats, but plaid suits. Sometimes even with plaid ties. Now that I think about it…plaid socks. What an eye full. Rick joined our cast of characters and never looked back. If you ask him he’d say he was there first. Rick has even been likened to a cockroach. Nothing, I mean nothing, not even a nuclear blast could remove Rick from the dealership.
Aside from his attire, Rick has an exceptional skill of listening, listening for the little things that can make all of the difference.
Springtime on the lot and Rick greets a nice family, a typical family with Mom, Dad & 2.3 kids. They meet, they talk, and they find common ground. The Husband mentions the fact that he drinks about a six-pack a day and the wife shares her discord. They are interested in a Pickup. They settle on a well equipped one and go for a test drive. After the drive they are all in agreement that this is the right truck for the family and Dad in particular enjoys the fit.
The Husband then says “I hafta get back to work”. The wife says, “No problem, I’ll finish up the negotiation.” It was little different than normal, but no problem. Rick and the wife fill out all of the paperwork. Rick makes his presentation of all the figures. He goes over the selling price, the trade value, the down payment and the monthly payment. She looks everything over and says “well this sure is the right truck” and the kids all smile, “but the payment is about $25 over our budget”, sadly she shared.
A moment to reflect and then Rick ask’ a simple question, “What does a six-pack of beer cost”? She answered with a frown, “About five dollars a day.” Rick leaned over to the wife. “Do you think that your husband would cut down on his beer drinking in order to get his new truck”
She starts to smile “I can do better than that”. So she calls her husband at work. “Honey, I’ve got a deal for you”. “If you agree to only buy a six pack every other day, you can have your new truck”. There is a lengthy pause. “Yes, I’ll do it” says the husband finally, anxious to get his new truck.
Now the wife says to Rick “I have been trying to get him to cut down on his beer consumption for years and you finally did it, thank you”. “I will never buy from anyone else!” She had gotten everything she wanted and more; his truck, her payment and an agreement to cut down on alcohol consumption. All courtesy of the guy in plaid, Rick, who listened to the little things.
Rick smiled as they hugged and the kids cheered, finished with the delivery Rick got off work and went and had a beer… or six.

Some people are larger than life. Some people have an even larger opinion of themselves. Physical size does give an advantage in a lot of situations. Not just being bigger than most people, but, to be willing to use that advantage to inflict your will on others can put you in a dominate position. Combined with a well known reputation for willingness, and adding a actual enjoyment of hurting people, will get a lot of people so see things your way.
Bill came into the dealership to buy his wife a car. He knew how things would go… and it better be his way. The process started very simply with Bill and his wife coming on the lot looking for a Corvette. Bill set the tone with the salesman early by telling him, “This is how this is going to work”.
As luck would have it their salesman was a “green pea”, with less than two months in the business. Instead of following the normal sales procedure, Bill dictated how things were going to happen. Normally the salesman drives the car off the lot, not with Bill calling the shots. He drove and then his wife drove. Somehow the salesman made it through the test drive.
Visibly shaken but still moving forward, the salesman followed the customers into the write-up booth. They were ready to move into what they perceived as the negotiation phase. They of course would get a deal… their way.
Who is your favorite person to play poker with? Can you describe them? I can. It’s the guy that I play against that shows me all of his cards up front.
The salesman had no control over the situation. A great time for a manager to get involved or to; ‘Take Over the Sale’. We are in a small office, just Bill, his wife, the salesman and I. We start to fill out the sales worksheet, bill tells his wife, “Go home and get the checkbook. By the time you get back I will have these guys just where I want them.” I knew right then that I had him.
We filled out the worksheet with the price that was on the window. Bill stated that there was no way he was paying that. He laughed at the worksheet. I stayed seated calm and in control. Bill stood up and acted physically threatening. I was unmoved. He pounded his fist on the table, he yelled, he demanded, but I just sat. After all he couldn’t leave his wife was in the car. We went through 20 more minutes of this behavior and believe me the salesman was sweating up a storm. I just sat waiting for the right moment. I didn’t think the salesman was going to survive what he thought was stress.
Bill’s wife finally came back. She walked into the office with a smiling from ear to ear because she was getting a Corvette.
With a big smile she said “Ok Honey, how much do I write the check for”? Bill’s giant ego left him no choice. He had already told his wife that he would have us where he wanted by now. So Bill put on his best “I won again smugness” for his wife and pointed to the number on the worksheet. It was the same number that had been there from the start, before all of the pounding, stomping and threatening.
I knew that whatever number was on the table when his wife got back they would pay. Bill said so. He wasn’t going to loose face with his wife. Easiest negotiation I can remember outside of one price selling.

CAR BUYING QUESTIONS

CAR BUYING QUESTIONS
I started selling cars in 1983. A long time salesman told me that I had missed the “heyday of the car salesman”, but that I should still do fine. Heyday could be defined as both the time before laws and regulations to protect consumers from predatory practices and when there were great profits to be made. In 1983 new trucks still did not have MSRP stickers in the windows. We were taught how to arrive at a starting price. Actually we were taught how to avoid the price and to focus on selling the product not the price.
I soon found myself, at 24, to be the only person under the age of 40 on the sales floor. Working with “seasoned” vets gave me the education of a lifetime. The things that I have heard being said and the techniques that have been deployed are near impossible to believe if I hadn’t seen and heard them firsthand. As these guys did it, a car sale is an art form. To do the impossible was an everyday occurrence.
It was an art form to take a total stranger and within hours to know everything about them and how to use it to close a sale. One of the single greatest compliments a car salesman can hear is “ we really didn’t come to buy a car today”.
If you have any questions about car buying or selling, just ask. Do you want to know how those crazy worksheets, especially the four square, that sales use really work? I can explain in detail. What is true cost? How to be a great buyer or seller? What really makes someone completely satisfied? What goes on when the salesman goes in to that little room and talks to the guy behind the curtain? How to apply sales techniques to your job or life? Whatever the question, let’s try to answer it.
I have worked at small town dealerships and I have been in dealer management of large auto groups with over 100 dealerships. I have been a liner, salesperson, closer, team leader, sales trainer, finance manager, desk manager, new car manager, general sales manager and general manager. I even stayed at one dealership for 15 years. Chevrolet, Cadillac, Toyota, Scion, Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Pontiac, Buick, GMC, Oldsmobile, Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Daewoo are most of the brands I have managed.
The current environment that I work in actually put’s our best price, upfront, on every vehicle everyday. Our salespeople are paid on customer satisfaction not how much you spend. We have an industry leading policy that you can’t buy the wrong vehicle with a seven day, 500 mile full refund policy. No questions asked. That is why I am at Sierra Motors in Jamestown, Ca. Design details
With a design that is very faithful to the original concept, the 2010 Camaro is a 21 st century sports car that acknowledges its heritage. A long front dash-to-axle and short rear deck give the Camaro classic proportions, while a sleek windshield profile, wheels pushed to the corners and muscular fender forms are modern elements that reinforce its advanced engineering – and give the car a decidedly aggressive stance.Elements such as a forward-V shape at the front of the car and “gills” in the rear quarter panels are distinctly Camaro cues, as are the broad rear fender “shoulders.” Those elements make the new Camaro instantly recognizable, but their execution is smoothly integrated into the contemporary exterior form. A family of large, 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels also contributes to the Camaro’s modern appearance.“The new Camaro is just that – new,” said Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design. “We acknowledge the nameplate’s strong heritage in the design, but recognize that keeping this modern sports car relevant meant more than simply honoring a classic car. The line forms, stance and overall execution are consistent with other new Chevrolets.”A well-executed balance of heritage, modern design and attention to detail also characterizes the Camaro’s interior. A pair of deeply recessed instrument binnacles that feature round gauges in square housings is a nod to classic Camaros, while an available ambient light package offers advanced LED light pipe technology to give the cabin a distinctive and inviting glow. Cloth upholstery is standard; heated leather-appointed seats are available.
Details such as large, chrome-trimmed controls, low-gloss surfaces and premium fabric or acrylic appliqués convey a richness that is unprecedented in previous Camaro models – and challenge its contemporary competitors. More great detail is evidenced in the available center-console gauge cluster, which takes its cue from a similar option on 1969 Camaros. It displays oil temperature, oil pressure, state-of-battery and transmission fluid temperature, all highlighted with modern LED backlighting.
Powertrains
An advanced, efficient 3.6L direct-injected V-6 with variable valve timing is standard on LS and LT models. Direct injection technology helps the engine deliver more power through increased efficiency, while maintaining fuel economy and lowering emissions. That means less fuel is consumed and lower emissions generated – including a 25-percent drop in cold-start hydrocarbon emissions. The Camaro’s 3.6L engine also employs variable valve timing to optimize performance and fuel economy across the rpm range. It is rated at an estimated 300 horsepower (224 kW) and 273 lb.-ft. of torque (370 Nm). A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 3.6L engine; a Hydra-Matic 6L50 electronically controlled six-speed automatic, with TAPshift control, is available. The high-performance Camaro SS is equipped with a powerful 6.2L V-8, with a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Standard, manual transmission-equipped models receive the LS3 engine, estimated at 422 horsepower (315 kW) and 408 lb.-ft. of torque (553 Nm). The LS3 debuted on the 2008 Corvette and uses high-flow cylinder heads based on the Corvette Z06’s LS7 engine to enable great low-end torque and high-rpm power. It is paired with a TR6060 six-speed transmission.A new, L99 V-8 engine is used on automatic transmission-equipped SS models. It is based on the LS3 and carries all of its high-performance design features, but also includes GM’s fuel-saving Active Fuel Management feature. It enables the engine to run on only four cylinders during light-load driving conditions, such as highway cruising, to improve fuel economy. The V-8 is estimated at 400 horsepower (299 kW) and 395 lb.-ft. of torque (535 Nm); and it is matched with a Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed transmission. This combination delivers an estimated 23 mpg on the highway.
Body structure and chassis
The 2010 Camaro is built on GM’s global rear-wheel-drive architecture, with a strong body structure that enhances safety, quietness and handling. World-class build quality and attention to detail are enabled by features including one-piece body side stampings and very precise tolerances between body panels.Front and rear independent suspensions are mounted to the rigid chassis, including a multi-link strut arrangement in the front with a direct-acting stabilizer bar and a double ball-joint configuration; and a unique, 4.5-link rear suspension that is double-isolated from the chassis for smoother, quieter driving experience.Camaro offers two suspensions. LS and LT models receive an FE2 (sport) suspension, while the SS receives the FE3 (performance) suspension, including a lower ride height. Each is tuned to match the performance capabilities of their respective powertrains, as are their wheel-and-tire combinations.A variable-rate rack-and-pinion power steering system mounts the rack forward of the front axle, for more direct action, an enhanced feeling of driver feedback and better weight balance.
Brakes and chassis control
Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS are standard on all models. LS and LT models receive single-piston calipers all around, with mass-reducing aluminum rear calipers. SS models have larger rotors that are acted upon by four-piston, aluminum Brembo calipers at all four corners. They are designed to stand up to the severe use encountered on road-race tracks, delivering excellent feedback and pedal feel, as well as fade-resistant performance during racing.GM’s StabilTrak electronic stability control system is standard and incorporates traction control. The system on SS models includes Competitive/Sport mode that is adjustable for performance driving, such as on a racetrack; it also includes a Launch Control feature on SS models with the manual transmission. It enables quicker, more consistent takeoffs during performance driving.Safety
Designed to protect occupants before, during and after a crash, the Camaro offers a comprehensive system of safety features – starting with a robust body structure and integral safety cage around the passenger compartment. High-strength steel and ultra high-strength steel are used in key areas throughout the structure.Safety technologies integrated in the Camaro include:
Driver and front-passenger dual-stage air bags
Driver and front-passenger seat-mounted thorax side-impact air bags
Head curtain side-impact air bags for front and rear seat occupants
Front seat safety belt load limiters and pre-tensioners
The front passenger detection system senses children and small-stature adults and suppresses air bag deployment when appropriate.
Standard OnStar service assists after a crash. With OnStar’s Advanced Crash Response System, the vehicle automatically sends a signal to OnStar for assistance, even if the air bags don’t deploy.Chevrolet is one of America’s best-known and best-selling automotive brands. With the largest dealer network in the United States, Chevy is the leader in full-size trucks and the leader in sales of vehicles priced $35,000 and above.
